About Thunderhorse Tuning

Built Different

Thunderhorse Tuning is a motorcycle performance shop in Utica, New York. We're not a dealer, not a franchise — just a shop that got tired of watching places half-ass tunes and charge full price for it.

We run our own dyno in-house in Utica. For MC clubs, rallies, and shop events across Central New York — Syracuse, Rome, Cooperstown, Oneonta — we'll bring the operation out for groups of five or more. We're V-twin specialists (Harley-Davidson, Indian, Ducati) — and all bikes are welcome.

"We wrote our own tuning software because the existing tools weren't cutting it. It's not about being fancy — it's about getting it right the first time."

We're not here to upsell you on parts you don't need. You tell us what you want the bike to do, we make it happen. And when we're done, you get the data — dyno sheets, before/after numbers, the whole picture.

Rob Dawson

Owner & Lead Dyno Operator

Grew up a gearhead — the kind of kid who'd rather be in the garage than anywhere else. Competed in motocross and rally racing before the wrenching side took over completely.

Studied mechanical and electrical engineering, then spent years deep in the weeds with ECUs, CAN bus systems, and engine management. Built race cars, built motorcycles, learned what actually makes them run right.

Wrote the tuning software we use in-house because the off-the-shelf options weren't good enough. Comes from a family of hardworking small business owners — that mindset stuck.

If my name's on it, it's right. That's not marketing talk. That's how I was raised and how I run this shop.

How We Tune Bikes

Most shops tune by feel and trial-and-error. Make a change, do a pull, look at the numbers, repeat. It works eventually, but you're basically paying them to guess.

We wrote our own tuning software — DynoAI — that uses actual engine physics to figure out what your motor needs. It's not magic — it's just math and data instead of guesswork.

Fewer Pulls, Better Results

Our software builds a solid baseline from minimal dyno runs. Less time on the dyno means less wear on your motor, faster turnaround, and money saved.

Tuned for Your Specific Bike

Not a copy-paste from another bike with "similar" mods. Your motor, your altitude, your fuel — calibrated specifically for what you're running.

Real-Time Engine Monitoring

Knock detection, AFR tracking, torque curves — we're watching everything during the pull and catching problems before they hurt your engine.

Complete Transparency

We don't hide behind "proprietary" bullshit. You get full dyno sheets, before/after numbers, and we'll walk you through exactly what we did and why.

DynoAI

AI-Powered ECU Calibration.
Built for the Real World.

DynoAI is proprietary tuning software developed in-house by Thunderhorse Tuning. It uses physics-based modeling and real-time data analysis to generate accurate VE (Volumetric Efficiency) tables from minimal dyno pulls — replacing the slow, repetitive trial-and-error process that most shops still rely on.

Whether you're a tuner looking for better tools, a shop owner looking to scale, or a potential partner exploring the motorcycle performance market — this is what DynoAI does and why it matters.

98%
VE map cell coverage vs ~80% traditional
01

One-Pull Baseline™

A single wide-open-throttle pull captures AFR data across the entire RPM range. DynoAI builds a physics model of your engine's breathing pattern from this data alone.

02

AI-Generated VE Table

Instead of correcting only the cells you tested, DynoAI uses engine physics to predict and fill the entire VE table — including part-throttle and cruise cells most shops never touch.

03

Real-Time Safety

During every pull, DynoAI monitors knock, AFR deviation, and torque curves in real time. If something looks wrong, the pull is aborted before your engine gets hurt.

04

Refine & Validate

2-4 refinement pulls dial in the calibration. You get full dyno sheets, before/after numbers, and a complete explanation of every change — no black box, no mystery.

Stop Guessing. Start Modeling.

Traditional tuning is a repetitive loop: make a pull, read the AFR, adjust a few VE cells, flash the ECU, repeat. You might do this 15-20 times before the map is dialed in — and you're still only correcting the cells you actually tested.

DynoAI takes a fundamentally different approach. It uses physics-based volumetric efficiency modeling to understand how your engine breathes, then generates a complete VE table from as few as one WOT pull.

The math is simple: Correction Factor = Target AFR / Measured AFR. DynoAI applies this principle across the entire operating envelope — not just the cells you happened to test.

What You Get
Complete VE Coverage

~98% of all VE table cells populated, including part-throttle and cruise — vs ~80% with traditional methods.

Bike-Specific Calibration

Not a copy-paste from a similar build. Your motor, your altitude, your fuel — calibrated for exactly what you're running.

Real-Time Knock Detection

Continuous monitoring during pulls. If detonation is detected, the pull aborts automatically and DynoAI recommends timing and AFR corrections.

Full Transparency

Complete dyno sheets, before/after data, and we walk you through every change. No proprietary mystery. You see what we did and why.

More Bikes. Less Time. Higher Revenue.

Every hour a bike sits on your dyno is an hour you're not tuning the next one. Traditional tuning takes 5-6 hours per bike — that's 1, maybe 2 bikes per day. DynoAI cuts that to 2-3 hours, meaning you can realistically tune 2-3 bikes per day with the same equipment and staff.

That's not a marginal improvement. That's a fundamental change in your shop's revenue capacity.

The Business Case

Dyno pulls per tune 15-20 3-5
Time per tune 5-6 hours 2-3 hours
Bikes per day 1-2 2-3

Result consistency Operator-dependent Repeatable & data-driven
Why This Matters for Your Shop
  • Faster turnaround — Customers get their bikes back sooner. Happier customers, more referrals.
  • Consistent results — DynoAI removes operator variability. Every tune is data-driven, not feel-driven.
  • Reduced liability — Real-time knock detection catches problems before they damage an engine. That's protection for you and your customer.
  • Competitive edge — Most shops in your market are still doing it the old way. AI-assisted tuning is a differentiator that matters.
  • Premium positioning — Transparency and technology justify premium pricing. Customers see the data — they know they're getting a real tune.

The Opportunity

The motorcycle aftermarket industry generates billions annually in the US alone. ECU calibration is a critical part of that market — every exhaust swap, air cleaner upgrade, or big bore kit requires a retune. Yet the tuning process itself hasn't fundamentally changed in decades.

DynoAI is purpose-built software that replaces trial-and-error with physics. It's not a bolt-on product from a dyno manufacturer — it's an independent platform developed by a working tuner who saw the problem firsthand and built the solution.

Market Position
Underserved Market

Most tuning shops use manual, repetitive methods. There is no dominant AI-assisted tuning platform on the market today.

Technical Moat

Proprietary physics-based VE modeling algorithms developed from real-world dyno data. Not a wrapper around existing tools — built from scratch.

Scalable Model

DynoAI works as shop-owned software today, with clear pathways to SaaS licensing, per-tune pricing, or OEM integration.

Platform Expandable

Currently optimized for V-twin motorcycles. The underlying physics model extends to any EFI platform — sport bikes, UTVs, automotive, marine.

Proven In Production

DynoAI isn't a prototype or a pitch deck concept. It's deployed and running at Thunderhorse Tuning today — calibrating real customer bikes on a real dyno, producing measurable results:

  • 97.5% VE table accuracy from a single baseline pull
  • ~98% cell coverage across the entire VE map (vs ~80% traditional)
  • 60-70% reduction in total dyno time per calibration
  • Real-time knock detection with automatic pull abort and corrective recommendations
  • Full data transparency — every tune generates complete before/after documentation
Growth Pathways
  • SaaS licensing — Per-shop or per-seat subscriptions for tuning shops nationwide
  • Per-tune pricing — Pay-per-use model for shops that want lower upfront commitment
  • OEM partnerships — Integration with dyno manufacturers (Dynojet, Land & Sea) as a software add-on
  • Training & certification — DynoAI-certified tuner program for standardized quality across partner shops
  • Platform expansion — Extend to automotive, marine, and powersports ECU calibration

FAQ

Full dyno tunes start at $650 and most land between $650–$850 depending on what's bolted to your bike. Diagnostic and tune corrections start at $300. Big bore, stroker, and forced induction builds are quoted individually — call or book a free consultation and we'll give you a real number, not a range.

Our dyno lives at the shop in Utica — that's where individual tunes happen. For MC clubs, rallies, and shop events across Central New York, we'll come to you with a minimum of five bikes. Below that, hauling the equipment isn't worth it for anyone. Come to the shop and we'll take care of you.

A full dyno tune typically takes 2-4 hours depending on your bike's modifications and current state. Our proprietary tuning software allows us to achieve precise results with fewer dyno pulls than traditional trial-and-error methods, which saves time and reduces wear on your motor.

We tune all motorcycles. Our specialty is V-twins — Harley-Davidson, Indian, and Ducati — but we also tune sport bikes, adventure bikes, metric cruisers, and custom builds. Stock bikes, big bore builds, and forced induction setups are all on the table.

Yes. Any change to your intake or exhaust affects your air/fuel ratio. Running without a proper tune after modifications can cause poor performance, excessive heat, and potential engine damage. We recommend tuning after any Stage 1 or higher modifications — air cleaner, exhaust, or both.

We see this all the time. Lean cruise, rich idle, timing that makes no sense — bad tunes are unfortunately common. We'll diagnose what's wrong, show you the data, and recalibrate it properly. Diagnostic and tune correction starts at $300.
